Fifth Law of Self-Discipline Remove These and Set Your Autopilot

If you find that despite your best intentions, something is always coming up that prevents you from focusing on the desired goal, then you might have a distraction problem that you need to address in order to get your self-discipline back on track. There are a number of ways to ween yourself off of the distractions of the modern world, you just need to commit to the act fully in order for it to be effective.

Make your to-do list a physical object

When you are making your daily to-do list to strengthen positive self-discipline habits, if you find yourself rarely getting through the items you have listed, the first thing you should do is switch from an electronic to-do list to a physical one. If you are like most people, you check your phone enough each day already, there is no reason for you to add checking something off your to-do list to the bunch as well. Having a list of goals separated from the other distractions in your life will make it more likely for you to use it and stay focused on the task at hand rather than taking a quick minute to check your email or Twitter feed.

In addition, if you find that you are rarely getting through your daily to-do list, then the number of things on the list, not the tasks themselves might actually be holding you up. Having too many options in a given scenario can create what is known as analysis paralysis which is the feeling that occurs when you freeze up because you have too many options in a given situation. As such, when transferring your to-do list to a physical sheet of paper, take the time to look at everything on the list and trim the fat where appropriate, you’ll be surprised what an effect simply seeing fewer words on the page can do.

Get used to doing one thing at a time.

The modern world is in the midst of a love affair with multitasking. It’s true, ever since the invention of the smartphone, more and more people are, it seems, unable to go 5 minutes without using their phone for something besides talking. In fact, it is statistically unlikely that you are giving this book your full attention while you read it, right now. If this describes you, congratulations, you have just uncovered one of the biggest drains on your self-discipline.

Multitasking is actually quite a bit of a misnomer, as instead of doing two or more things at once, you are really splitting your focus equally among 2 or more different scenarios and working on several different things in sporadic bursts. While this is perfectly acceptable when it comes to things like online browsing or watching television, when it comes to working towards your short term or long term goals, the only thing that multitasking will provide you with is more ready access to a wider variety of potential distractions.
