IVIANA AND NIMUA bid the Swimmers farewell and headed toward the area where the island homes were located when a little girl ran up to them, informing that Rhimesh wished for them to join her in her home as soon as they were able.
They promptly arrived and were surprised to find Darist there.
"I've been speaking with Darist, asking how he feels about your presence on the island so far." Rhimesh, sitting in a large comfortable looking chair, directed this statement to Iviana as though it were the simplest thing in the world. "I asked him because I know he is acquainted with you, but isn't, perhaps, so attached as Nimua, here."
Nimua and Iviana looked at Darist.
"What?" he asked. "It's not as if I told her to send Ivi home."
"No, he didn't," Rhimesh agreed. "On the contrary. He assures me your intentions are honest, even that you are interested in learning about our history."
Iviana peered up at Darist, confused by this last statement.
"You wanted to hear about the Age of the Great One..." he urged.
"Yes!" she said quickly. "I did."
"Well then, why not begin now." Rhimesh smiled. "I suppose the more you learn of us, the better we may know you, in time. Let us see, now... my, it was a glorious age, but it ended tragically, I'm afraid."
"What caused its end?" Iviana asked.
"A woman named Aradia. She'd fallen in love with an attached man and her love was not received by him. She was a bitter woman, for more than her spurned love, but in her bitterness, she tried to do away with the man who'd rejected her, our Realm Leader at the time and the great Tragor's favorite companion, Latos."
Iviana flinched at the name Latos, and her stomach grew ill when Aradia was named, but she couldn't conceive why.
"She did not succeed and, in a fury, Latos flew her into your world, banishing her from ours. That was when we knew very little about your homeland. While there, she consorted with demonic forces and learned the dark arts of your world. It is written that, one night, she created a blazing, spell-bound fire to lure the dragons to her."
"Dragons are rather attracted to hot places," Darist interrupted.
"Yes," Rhimesh continued. "Not every dragon answered the fire's call, but a great many were baited. It was there, while gazing into the dark forces the fire was created with, her daemons possessed the dragons and filled their hearts with black fire."
"But why?" Iviana wanted to know.
"Dragons are generally gentle creatures... but they are also very powerful. Aradia wanted to control them, to use them to take over the Greater Archipelagos and ultimately have her revenge on those she felt had never understood her. She did not possess a Great Gift, you see, and this frustrated her, sending her down a dark path. But once the daemons had power over more than half of dragon-kind, they no longer needed her and she lost control of the dark dragons.
"I'm sure you've heard what they
