SEVENTEEN

2018

Tuesday

After Leo left, Mia stayed on the terrace for a few moments to absorb what he’d told her. Then she went up to her room to call Erica. She wanted more than anything to fill her friend in on what had happened, and she would have reached out even if it had been the middle of the night back in New York. Thankfully, though, it was four in the afternoon.

“And he doesn’t know the schianto is right there in your suitcase?” Erica asked when Mia had finished her story.

“No, I didn’t want to tell him,” Mia said, sitting on the bed, the night table lamp glowing gold and the stars outside large and hot white. “I told him I know something about it. But I wanted to hold the truth back, so he’d want to help me out more. Plus, it scared me the way he talked yesterday on the tour about how they intend to prosecute whoever has the schianto. I can’t tell him it’s here until I can prove that my grandmother didn’t steal it.”

“And he agreed to take you to the castle?”

“Yes! Tomorrow. I feel bad not telling him the truth, but I don’t have a choice.”

“Wow, no choice but to spend the day with a dreamy Italian. Poor you…”

Mia rolled her eyes. “It’s not like that, Erica. And he’s not Italian, by the way. He’s American. He’s from Philadelphia, although his family moved here when he was a kid. But that’s not what this is about. I mean, I have a boyfriend. That’s not why I’m here.”

“And yet, he’s made quite an impression on you…”

She paused as she realized Erica was right. “He has,” she said slowly, choosing her words thoughtfully. “Because there’s something else to him, something more. He’s got this… earnest quality to him. And a kind of sadness. Oh, maybe it was just because we were sitting out there alone and it was so dark and empty. But it sounded like he was searching for something. I mean, yes, he’s searching for the schianto, but he also said he has a special connection to the castle. It sounded very personal. More than it should be, if this was just some run-of-the-mill exhibit and he simply wants the thing returned. And I’m so curious about what his stake is in all this.”

“He’s probably asking himself the same thing about you,” Erica said.

Mia nodded, then paused, again struck by what Erica had said. Did he see the same intensity in her as she saw in him—and was that why he was willing to bring her back to the castle tomorrow? Could he be searching for information about someone, as she was? Was it possible that they both saw in each other a need that mirrored their own?

“I hate to say it, but you don’t have that much time,” Erica said softly. “Tomorrow is Wednesday already. You’re heading back to Rome Sunday morning to catch your flight home.”

“I know.” Mia sighed, leaning back on the padded headboard.
