CHAPTER 13
Angus
My eyes snapped open. Startled, I glanced around the room in a haze. I had fallen asleep fully dressed, clutching Brielle close to me.
Disoriented and groggy, I dragged myself into an upright position and rubbed my eyes, desperately attempting to grasp my surroundings.
Brielle was nowhere to be found. Panic surged through me as my eyes darted around frantically searching for any trace of her. The warmth on her side of the bed hinted that she hadnât been gone for long.
Without a momentâs hesitation, I leaped out of bed, my thoughts racing at lightning speed.
Had something terrible befallen her? Was she in grave danger? Despite my mounting anxiety, I urged myself to stay composed, attempting to quell the rising tide of panic.
Perhaps she had simply wandered off to the bathroom or went to the kitchen for a sip of water.
I ventured out of the bedroom and scoured every nook and cranny. No sign of her in the living room, bathroom, kitchen, or even the balcony. It was as if she had vanished into thin air.
A heavy feeling settled in my gut as the reality dawned upon me. She must have left from the safety of Annaâs apartment without telling me.

When I stepped into Annaâs chamber, she was still in the blissful embrace of sleep. Gently, I nudged her, prompting her awakening.
âAngus, whatâs the matter?â Her voice was heavy with sleep, her eyes struggling to stay open.
âItâs Brielle,â I whispered, keeping my voice low. âSheâs vanished. I canae locate her anywhere.â
In an instant, Anna jolted into a state of wariness. âVanished? What do you mean?â
âI awoke this morning, only to discover her absence. I dinnae know where she is.â
With haste, Anna retrieved her phone from the nightstand and swiftly checked her messages. The expression on her face spoke volumes. âOh, my stars,â she gasped. âLook.â
After she handed me that little thing they called phone, I read Brielleâs message. She had taken matters into her own hands, confronting her former employer for the money she was owed. A sinking feeling gripped my stomach.
âAnna, we must find her,â I uttered urgently. âShe could be in deep trouble. Dae ye know where this place is?â
Anna nodded resolutely. âIâll make another attempt to reach her. Perhaps she will answer this time.â
Yet, no response came.
Anna told me that she could drive us to the diner Brielle had gone to. I nodded in agreement, but my mind was racing with confusion.
What was this car she spoke of? What was a car? It sounded like those metal beasts that I had seen roaring on the road. But if it would get us to the dinner faster, I was willing to try it.
Indeed, as we exited the building, I saw a strange thing parked on the street. It was a long and low metallic marvel, equipped with four wheels.
Anna opened the door and gestured for me to get in.
I did as she said, but I couldnât help feeling uneasy. I squeezed myself into the cramped quarters, encountering an unfamiliar scent that pervaded the air.
