The salon provides one of the strongest examples of how an informal social institution, dominated by women in their actual management, even if ultimately financed by the husband, and using the most subtle interpersonal discriminations as a guide to access to the public power of the patron himself, was in fact an integral part of the making of a career and the gaining of reputation. Henri Beyle, the contemporary expert on the interconnection between public and private politics, and himself a dedicated habitué of salons, made the point unequivocally in his autobiography:

What a difference it would have made if M. Daru or Mme. Cambon had said to me in January 1800: Dear cousin, if you want to have an assured place in society, you must have twenty people who have a good reason to recommend you. So, choose a salon, go there every Tuesday (or whatever its day is) without fail, make absolutely sure that you are winning, or at the very least polite, to everyone who goes to that salon. You will be something in the world, you can even hope to win the favor of an amiable woman, when you are backed by two or three salons; and at the end of ten such years, these salons will open every door to you.24
