Chapter 27

Do you still love him?

I think about that more than is normal. Think about how I would feel if our positions were reversed.

And, honestly, I don’t know how I would feel, because I don’t know you. I know your name and the color of your eyes. But I don’t know what made you fall in love with him in the first place. I don’t know how he makes you feel when you’re alone, or if you miss him when he’s gone.

I stared at the phone in my hand, re-reading the text message I’d received a few minutes ago for at least the tenth time.

Brady: Can you stop by my place tonight? I have a present for Micah.

It seemed rude to refuse him after he’d bought Micah a birthday gift. And I’d already told him that my brother was spending the night at Evan’s house, so I couldn’t use Micah as an excuse.

Still . . . I was reluctant to spend time alone with Brady, much less at the guys’ apartment. Wyatt could show up at any moment, and I’d been hoping to draw out my avoidance routine as long as possible.

I checked the time—seven minutes after eight. More than likely, Wyatt wouldn’t be home from the Broken Spur until after midnight. It was Friday night, and since I had the night off, he was needed behind the bar.

So, technically, there was plenty of time to stop by, hang out for a while, and then get the hell out of there.

My decision made, I texted him back.

Me: I can be there in ten.

Despite my delay in answering him, he replied immediately.

Brady: I can’t wait.

Satisfied that the casual black dress I’d been wearing all day looked cute enough, I added a thin red wrap sweater over the top and traded my black flats for a pair of red wedges. Then, I fluffed my hair, touched up my makeup, and left my apartment.

It only took a few minutes to drive to the former hotel, and I spent every second of that time psyching myself up for seeing Brady again. After my initial freak out when he’d shown up at the bar two nights ago, things had been normal between us. Easy.

At least, until Wyatt had appeared.

Brady was waiting at the security door, and as he let me in, his gaze swept over me. “You look beautiful, as always.”

“Thank you.” Noticing that he was wearing jeans and a black tee displaying the outline of Mario, I grinned. “Nice shirt.”

He glanced down at it, his expression sheepish. “I should probably up my style game now that I’m not in grad school anymore.”

“Are you kidding? I love your video game apparel. It makes you more approachable.”

As he ushered me into the elevator, he asked, “I’m not already approachable? What about these?” He pointed to his glasses.

I studied his face, taking note of the way his chestnut brown hair flopped over his forehead and the openness of his dark eyes behind his glasses. He was right. He should have been utterly approachable.
