Chapter Eleven

I woke a second time to the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and warm, spicy food. I sat up as Cesar set a bag and two steaming cups of coffee by the side of the bed.

“Get a good nap?” he asked, sitting beside me and planting a kiss on my cheek.

I nodded, covering my mouth as I stifled a yawn. “How long did I sleep?”

He pulled a tinfoil package out of the bag. “About half an hour.”

No wonder I felt like a zombie. My mouth watered as Cesar opened the foil, revealing a buttery tortilla.

“Hot sauce?” he asked me as he opened the tortilla, exposing fluffy eggs and crispy bacon.

I pinched my fingers together. “Just a little.”

He handed me a taco, and I eagerly took a bite. Eggs, bacon, and butter exploded in my mouth.

“Mmmm.” I covered my mouth to avoid showing Cesar my chewed food. “These are good. Where did you get them?”

“From that taco house down the street.” He sat across from me and dumped two cups of sauce on his breakfast.

We wordlessly ate in bed. I had two tacos, and he polished off four¸ plus he’d brought me a cup of coffee. I eyed the bag, thinking about eating one more taco, surprised at how hungry I was.

“We forgot to eat dinner,” I said, remembering the smell of charcoal last night.

“That’s okay.” He gulped down food. “I can grill the steaks tonight if you want to come over.”

“All right,” I said with a smile, “but I really do have to go to work tomorrow.”

He set his coffee down and leaned toward me. “I won’t keep you up as late tonight, bella.”

When he touched my cheek, my eyelids fluttered shut. He brushed a soft kiss across my lips, then pressed firmer. I opened my mouth to his, tasting coffee and spice. I sighed when he pulled away, instantly missing him. Dear God, this man had me under a spell.

He stared at me for a long heartbeat, his eyes darkening. I couldn’t help but flush under his intense gaze, and I worried the freckles on my nose were too noticeable without makeup.

He fisted a tinfoil wrapper in his hand. “I want to ask you something.”

I bit my lip as butterflies fluttered in my stomach. “What?”

“I want to know if you’ll be my girl.”

I sucked in a sharp breath, my hand flying to my chest. Was he serious? I noticed how his entire body went rigid as he awaited my answer. Yes, yes he was serious. Omigod! My mind froze.

“Like your girlfriend?” I asked.

His lip twitched. “Yes.”

When Cesar had first flirted with me, I’d thought he was only after one thing, but it turned out he wanted something more than a hot tub fling. My heart pumped faster. “I’ve never been in a relationship. I don’t know if I’d be any good at it.”

He pulled my hands into his lap. “You’ve been pretty damn good at it so far. I’ve only had one serious relationship, so I’ve probably got a lot to learn, too.
