THE TOOTH
He was falling, tumbling and slipping, yet not losing consciousness. Flakes of ice were all around him, slapping and pushing him downward. Then it was as if he were on a slide, plummeting awkwardly until the frosty chute ended and his covered shoulder punched the side of the chasm opening.
Thick gloves groped uselessly until he surrendered his limbs to the blue and black hole, expecting to drop forever only to be disappointed by impacting onto an uneven floor.
The cold white dust chased him, almost burying him like sand and he rolled away, surprised that he had not blacked out.
Alex leant up on his elbows, lying on his stomach. His protective white winter gear had cushioned his falls. He could feel nothing was broken and laughed out loud, hearing his rough lark echo about the icy room.
‘Stop that, you’ll bring the whole glacier down on top of us,’ Axle snorted.
Part of the dark chamber lit up in bright blue as Axle activated his light.
Alex stood up, seeing his massive icy prison. It was all crystal blue and streaked with lines of white showing off pockets of black with rounded off corners that could lead to anywhere. Where he had fallen the snow still sprinkled lightly as castor sugar falling from a sieve.
There was no going back up, he had dropped too far in the earth. Alex sighed deeply.
‘Well done. Now we will definitely be expelled,’ Axle moaned, ‘no first year has ever been ejected in the history of Save the World Academy. Lucky me to get the one wearer who will. You had to open that case. I told you not to. I told you to remain in the White Tiger 2.’
You are always telling me what to do. It wasn’t cold or warm in this chamber, only eerie and silent. If you are worth anything, Axle, tell me how to get out of this.
‘We are too far below for S.W.A. to locate my built in tracker. However, there are hollows and hidden passages hidden around and beneath the ice,’ Axle informed, ‘send out one short cry, not too loud as to upset the walls, and I shall use the resounding resonance to work out our nearest escape. Once on higher ground, the Academy, or at least whoever is looking for us, will pick up our signal and rescue us.’
Alex for once did as instructed, letting his long and deep “hello” rattle the glass like caverns. The word carried almost endlessly, entering one dark passage, and then exiting the ones beside it and echoing further off that.
‘There is an open chamber a day’s walk from here through the fourth opening to your right. There are treacherous twists and turns and risk of unstable ground, but it is the only feasible way of escape.’
Alex nodded and shouldered the backpack half-heartily on his back. I’ve gone too far this time. I should have stayed put.
The blue fissure halted its screams and rumblings. The faint sound of crushed ice trickling like sand in an hourglass had stopped.
