Chapter 9

Sarah sewed another button on the ragged shirt. At least she had work. Herman had been more than nice to her. Talking all the while about how since he was courting her, he might want to take a walk after the store closed.

She glanced at the window. Darkness answered her question. For all of Herman’s claims to care about her, his store came first. She would never be more than a hired helper to the man.

The good doctor treated her much the same. Shouting commands at her to change this bandage or clean up the patient. He never seemed to notice her discomfort.

She set the sewing aside and pressed lightly on her stomach. How was she ever going to provide for her and this child? Tears slipped down her cheeks.

Cyrus was wrong. She didn’t have time to wait for a man who adored her. Her thoughts mocked her. There would be no man to adore her for she was not worthy.

Sarah slipped from her bed to the window and looked out into the blackness. She would have to get either Blake or Herman to want her. And whichever one asked first, she’d say yes.

Tomorrow, she’d set about to look her best. Fix her hair as Julia showed her. Like it or not, she needed one of those men to marry her. She was trapped.

After breakfast, Sarah rushed to her room, put on her best dress, and brushed her hair. Near tears, she released her hair and gave up. How Julia brushed her wild hair and tamed it into a braid and wrapped it in a stylish bun was beyond her.

“Why must I have wild, unruly hair?” She flung the brush across the room.

She stared at her image in the mirror. Why must I be so … so unadorable?

The tightening around her middle urged her to rise. She had no time to lose. Today, she’d find a husband whether Blake and Herman realized it or not.

Feeling stronger, she tied a bow in her hair, and marched down the stairs. She hoped to escape without notice, but almost to the door, Bessy came out of the kitchen.

“Why, don’t you look nice, Sarah. Are you going to meet someone?”

My future husband. “Thank you, Bessy. I’m going to call on Mr. Fieldman. See if he has any sewing for me to do.” Caught in her own lie, she remembered the pile she already had waiting in her room.

“Oh, I see.” The matron gave her a knowing smile. “Would you like me to have Don escort you?”

“No, I’ll be fine.” Sarah didn’t wait for anymore chatter and scooted out the door. Once outside, she regretted forgetting her woolen shawl as cold winds buffeted her.

Rubbing her arms, she practically ran to Herman’s store. The only thing good about the chill was it kept Hank inside his saloon so he couldn’t harass her.

What if I end up working in the saloon? Me and my child are in such dire straits.

“Stop that.” Sarah chided herself for letting the what ifs get hold of her.
