"These people need faith if they ever expect the Lord to grant them a victory," Jellal said, pacing the small room he shared with Drin.

Anais stood by the wall, listening to the two Elorians discuss their plans. The mercenaries were given their own space apart from them, leaving them to be able to talk alone.

Anais and Lyssa were supposed to stay with the other merchant lords, in theory. While Lyssa likely would remain in the underground compound, Anais itched to mount a rescue effort of Elaym. They couldn't leave him in the clutches of these evil Sekarans. If they tortured him for information, his suffering would be indescribable. Anais knew firsthand how they treated their slaves in an inhumane manner.

Drin shook his head, sitting on the bottom bunk of a double cot. He had his hands folded in his lap. "Now isn't the time, Jellal. Their hearts need to be open. I went through this with the Skree. When they are receptive to the message, that is when you'll change hearts."

"I was there when Drin spoke," Err-dio said. "It was because we asked him. He didn't force his messages on us."

"But nothing can be accomplished without faith. How are we supposed to wage a holy war without the faithful?" Jellal slapped his hand on his leg, frustrated.

"We are the faithful," Drin said. "By our deeds they'll know us."

Anais had been watching them go on like this for a while. Jellal had less patience than Drin from what she'd seen. She was glad it hadn't been him who'd rescued her from the Sekarans originally. She might not have been as receptive to the tales of the Elorian God if Jellal had.

Nanites coursed through her veins, reminding her of the very real, tangible gifts Drin bestowed upon her. But those were an anomaly. Most non-Elorians never received the technological wonders that reshaped battles. They could only gain faith by seeing it on display in others.

"If we rescue Elaym, it will ingratiate you to the merchant lords here," Anais said, hoping to sound half as persuasive as Lyssa did when she negotiated with others.

Drin and Jellal were the best hope to save Elaym. Before it was too late.

"I'm not sure that's the wisest course, either," Drin said, frowning. "If we mount a rescue mission, it will alert the Sekarans to the presence of Templars."

"Only if we're not careful," Jellal said. "I think the woman's right. Give the people here something to believe in. It's the way we can foster the message and save their souls."

Silence fell between the two men. Jellal's gaze was almost challenging. Anais wondered if she would have to break the two up. Elorians were such intense people in their faith and their constant battling.

"Elaym will be important to the morale of everyone here, Drin," she nudged again.

"What do we know of this psychiatric ward?" Drin asked. "How fortified is it? We still haven't gotten much of a lay of the land. The Pyus make it sound like there isn't much of a Sekaran force, but I don't want to underestimate them as they do us.
