By the late 1920s, South Pacific Avenue was well on its way to becoming an important area of commerce, as seen in the 1927 photograph above. Taken while facing south on Pacific Avenue from Sixth Street is Auburn Motor Cars, a gas station, and a building being renovated by Foss Designing and Building Company on the right. Farther down the right side of the street is the insurance company of M. L. Campbell and Son. The large sign of the Maryland Hotel can be seen to the left of Auburn Motor Cars. It is located on West Eighth Street. Some of these structures have survived. The building that housed the car company has been remodeled. The gas station site is now the Croatian Cultural Center of Greater Los Angeles (formerly a bank building constructed in 1928). The M. L. Campbell and Son insurance building still stands but now houses small businesses and apartments. The Maryland Hotel remains in business.
