CHAPTER 19
Samson continued to see Kenya over the next week, and she started pushing him to commit to her and take their relationship public now that her sister knew about them.
“I’m not ready for that,” he continued to tell her.
He enjoyed her company, but now that he had accomplished what he’d set out to do, Samson decided it was time to end things with Kenya. He had no further use for her.
The sound of the doorbell pulled him away from his thoughts. Samson got up and walked across the room to see who his visitor was.
“Kenya, what are you doing here?” Samson didn’t like the way she’d just showed up at his town house without calling. He would be leaving in a few minutes to help set up tables for the Christmas dinner being held the next day. Every year at this time, Hillside opened its doors to feed the homeless.
It was definitely time to put an end to their relationship.
“I’m sorry for just showing up like this,” Kenya blurted out. “But I really need to talk to you.”
“I have to be at the church to help set up for tomorrow. Can this wait until later?”
“This won’t take long,” she said in a choked voice.
He could tell she was upset. “If this is about your sister’s little visit—”
Kenya interrupted him by saying, “I’ve told her to mind her own business. This is my life.”
“I don’t care what your sister thinks. Look, Kenya, we can discuss this later. Why don’t you meet me here around seven? I’ll make dinner.”
“Samson . . .”
“Honey, I really have to be at the church tonight.”
She released a long sigh. “Okay. I’ll see you at seven. Waiting another five hours won’t change anything.”
Samson could tell that she was really bothered about something, but it would just have to wait. Maybe she had come to the same conclusion that they needed to go their separate ways. It would certainly make things easier.
Kenya crossed his mind a couple of times while he was setting up for the dinner. Samson couldn’t shake the feeling that something was seriously wrong. He just couldn’t figure out what it could be.
After he finished at the church, Samson went home and began cooking. He had planned a nice meal for them. They would eat, and then talk.
Kenya arrived a few minutes after seven.
“Dinner’s almost ready,” he told her.
She nodded, but couldn’t get any words out.
“You okay?” Samson asked.
“I’m fine.”
When they settled down at the table to eat, Samson asked, “Now, what was so important that you had to come running over here?”
“Savannah keeps saying that you’re not in love with me.” Kenya laid her fork across her plate. “Is she right?”
Samson wiped his mouth with the edge of his napkin. “I care for you, Kenya, but it’s not what I would call love. I’ve had enough of that particular emotion.”
“What Savannah did was wrong, and I know she hurt you terribly, but you don’t have to give up on love.”
“We don’t need to rehash this.
