Tenet Five
You are either successful as you define success, or you are unhappy to some degree. There is no third option.
“Everyone,” the wizard went on, “and I do mean everyone, must be successful in whatever way embodies success for them, or they will experience unhappiness throughout their life. This will only change when they make the decision to become successful, again, using their personal definition of success, which Tenet One leads them to.”
“Tenet Five does sound rather simplistic and sweeping, to the point of generalizing,” Sampson noted.
“All the Tenets do, when one first hears them,” the old man replied, “but that does not invalidate their wisdom.”
“But, are you saying that everyone who is not successful, as they defi ne success, is unhappy all of the time? That is simply not the case. Not in my experience.”
“Read Tenet Five once again. It does not say ‘miserable all the time’. It clearly says ‘unhappy to some degree’. Nor does it state that those who are successful are in a constant state of bliss. Generally speaking, if you wish to do something great with your life, and you never set out to do it, you will be unhappy, and quite often too. It is as simple as that. Miserable? Perhaps, perhaps not, but certainly unhappy. You may not even know why you are unhappy, but unhappy you will be. Tell me that unfulfilled people are truly and honestly pleased with their lives. It is simply not so.”
Sampson thought for a moment and shrugged.
“A non verbal response,” said the old man, “Apparently learning three Tenets in one day has worn your vocal cords. Perhaps now would be a good time to repeat your morning run?”
Sampson frowned, and his legs already started to ache just thinking about it.
