Bait

The best natural bait is small lengths of conch or sandworm. Small crabs or strips of clam also work well.

Lures

When fly fishing, use fast-sinking flies.

Equipment

For fly equipment, use a 9- or 10-weight fly rod, depending on wind conditions and the weight of the fly. The reel should hold at least 200 yards of backing material. Most anglers prefer a floating line, although the choice of line is yours. The leader varies from 40- to 20-pound test, depending on the length of the rod and the fly line used. Generally, a 9-weight line requires a 30-pound-test leader. A fluorocarbon tippet of 15-pound test is adequate.

Although numerous fly patterns can be used for bonefish, flies that sink fast are best; they allow the fly to sink ahead of where the bonefish is likely to be heading.

As for a spinning rod, use a 6- to 8-foot medium-action rod with a matching reel filled with 300 yards of 6- to 10-pound-test monofilament line. Hooks should be number 4 to number 2, depending on where you’re fishing.
