Diet change thus leads to a loss of culture and identity, a form of what Elizabeth Hoover (2017) calls “environmental reproductive injustice.” Just as ceremonies surrounding fish create and maintain community ties and provide identity, so too does their absence and decline lead to further cultural disruption. Originally prescribed through Karuk creation stories, Karuk ecological knowledge is developed and passed along through practices of food management, harvesting, and preparation. As families work together, information and stories are shared. In addition to the transmission of knowledge, these stories provide bonds and cohesion that hold the family and community together. In addition to the loss of both culture and ecological knowledge with diet change, major social disruptions occur from the loss of traditional foods and all of their associated practices—from management to consumption. Traditional food has an important place in the fabric of community life (Kuhnlein and Chan 2000; Kuhnlein and Receveur 1996). When elders die young, they cannot pass love and knowledge on to the younger generations. When multigenerational family and social food-gathering activities disappear or are diminished, an entire field of social relations and their combined network are lost.
