Chapter 14

The stagecoach arrived on schedule. Sue was the first to hug Sally Ann as she got off followed by James.

“Ma, you look fantastic. It doesn’t look as though Pa’s retirement has yet driven you to distraction.”

“James, if only you’d been here three hours ago you wouldn’t be sayin’ that to me now. But that’s a story I can tell at supper. Say hello to your cousin Ruth.”

“Hello James, Sally Ann, it’s nice to meet you both.”

“Let me have a look at you, Ruth. I haven’t seen you since I was eight. We have a lot of catching up to do. And this is my wife Sally Ann.”

“Thank you so much for the dresses, Sally Ann. They’re the most beautiful dresses I’ve ever seen.”

“Oh, it was my pleasure, Ruth. I brought a few more for you to try on. If you like them, you can keep them.”

They all went back to the Wyatt household and enjoyed a supper of potato soup and cheese sandwiches.

“So, Pa, how is retirement treating you?”

“I gotta say I don’t miss sheriffin’ at all. Little Miss Ruth here has given me a job as handyman at the site of her future kitchen.”

“Oh please, tell me more. This sounds exciting. Where is this going to be?” This was very interesting to Sally Ann. She loved being James’ wife but she always wondered what it would be like to have a job.

Ruth sat there quiet as she did most of the evening. She was hoping that question was directed to either Sue or Robert but since everyone was looking at her, she answered. “It’s the vacant buildin’ on the corner that belonged to my Ma and Pa. I really like cookin’ so we were thinkin’ maybe I could turn it into a kitchen.”

“That’s a great idea, Ruth. Can we go look at it tomorrow? I would love to see what you’re planning. Maybe I can give you some ideas. James and I have gone to many kitchens in the city.”

“I was hopin’ you might offer that. We can go after breakfast, if that’s all right with you, Aunt Sue.”

“That will be just fine.”

“James, do you think you can come too? I’d like to get your thoughts on how much money you think I’ll need to get things started.”

“Well, figuring that out is going to take a group effort. I’ll probably be able to tell you kind of the bigger things that you’ll need but Ma is gonna have to tell you the cooking things you’ll need. Just as an example, all the tables are going to need salt and pepper shakers. But as to how much salt and pepper you’re going to need to buy, that’s where Ma will come in.”

“This is so exciting, Ruth. We can put our lists together, go to the Mercantile and find out how much things will cost. We’ll put everything on the list, then come home, add it all up and then start eliminating things that put you over budget. I’m so happy for you, Ruth.
