Chapter Thirteen

Logan gave his daughter time to doze off—it never took the girl long—then moved closer to Ruth and sat cross-legged in front and a little to the side of her rocker. “Been thinking about the other night.”

She rocked the chair back, stopped it, then did a little adjusting herself sideways and faced him full on.

Even in the firelight, anyone could easily see the woman had fine features, pretty as a picture, and he burned one into his mind’s eye. She looked aglow, and he wanted to remember her that way.

“I’ve thought on it, too.” She took on a serious expression, but it only made her all the more desirable.

“You asked, and I’ve refrained from taking any liberties with you, Ruth, but it’s about all I can do not to wrap my arms around you and never let go. I dream of your kisses, and . . .” Wait. Why was he blabbing about his night visions?

“Thank you, Logan. I truly appreciate you keeping your distance.”

“Would you be willing to discuss a future with me?”

“Certainly, there’s no harm in talking. I’d be glad to.”

A sigh of relief escaped. “Praise the Lord. I thought you might say no.”

“I’ve actually wondered what your plans were once we got to Oregon. Are you thinking of farming?”

“Yes, ma’am, if the ground is as good as they say. Some of us have been talking and figure if we help each other, we can each get a cabin up then some ground cleared and broke before spring.”

“That sounds like a fine plan. It’s good. Neighbors helping neighbors. I like that.”

“I brought enough seed for a right nice vegetable garden, and dried corn kernels for ten acres. Figure that will feed us and the oxen and still give me enough carryover for double or triple the acreage the next year.”

“What about ready cash? Have you got enough to see you through?”

“Yes, ma’am, I believe more than enough. The Lord’s blessed me, plus I figure beside farming, I can smith some, too. Might even build a sawmill if I can find some ground with a free-flowing creek. I hear tell there’s timber aplenty.”

“That sounds so promising.”

“I also brought a nice sixteen-inch circular saw blade with me and a six-foot cross-cut saw to boot, just in case.”

“Sounds like you’ve got it figured out.”

“No, ma’am, not at all. It’s been my experience the plans of men are foolishness. I pray for His guidance and put my trust in the Lord.”

“I try, too, but sometimes it’s so hard to know what He wants a body to do.”

“True, but that’s why it’s called faith.”

She rocked a couple of times, nodding, then stopped again on the third back-swing. “What about Star?”

“Oh, she’ll come around. I told her she didn’t run my life.”

“I wasn’t talking as though I would be by your side with all your plans or her new bad attitude toward me.” Ruth snickered, a joyful sound that carried a bit of consternation.

“You weren’t?”

“No, sir. I was speaking to her future, finding a good man to marry.
