LIEVEN (Lieven III), Ivan Andreyevich (Johann George) (b. 4 June 1775, Kiev—d. 26 February 1848, Mittau) was born to prominent noble family in the Lifland gubernia. He began service as a kaptenarmus in the artillery in 1779, and transferred to the Life Guard Semeyonovsk Regiment on 16 December 1790. Lieven became an aide-de-camp to Grand Duke Alexander in 1796. Over the next three years, he was awarded the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, conferred the title of count of the Russian Empire (March 1799), and promoted to colonel (20 April 1799). Lieven became a major general and chef of the Lieven’s Combined Grenadier Regiment on 13 October 1800. He was relieved of his duties and ordered to remain with the army on 1 May 1801.
Lieven took part in the 1806-1807 Campaigns in Poland and distinguished himself at Eylau, where he earned the Order of St. George (3rd class) on 20 April 1807. In 1809-1811, he served in the Danubian Principalities and fought at Nikopol, Vidin, and Ruse. During the 1812 Campaign, he led the 10th Division of the 3rd Reserve Army of Observation and fought at Ustilug, Lubomle, and Brest-Litovsk. Lieven served in General Osten-Sacken’s detachment in 1813 and fought at Pulawa, Czenstonchov, Breslau, Katzbach, and Leipzig (Order of St. Alexander of Neva). A promotion to lieutenant general followed on 27 September 1813. During the invasion of France, Lieven fought at Brienne and La Rothière, where he was seriously wounded.
After the war, he commanded the 10th Division before retiring on 25 December 1815. Lieven was conferred the title of prince of the Russian Empire in 1826. During his career, he was also decorated with the Orders of St. Anna (1st class) with diamonds, of St. Vladimir (2nd class), the Prussian Order of Red Eagle, the Swedish Order of the Sword and a golden sword for courage.
LIKHACHEV, Yakov (Jacob) Ivanovich (b. 1766—d. 1821) was born to a noble family from the Jaroslavl gubernia. He enlisted as a sub ensign in the Life Guard Semeyonovsk Regiment in 1785, and was promoted to sergeant in January 1788. He participated in the Russo-Swedish War in 1789-1790, fought at Vyborg and Svenkzund, and rose to ensign. In 1792-1794, Likhachev served in the Sofia Carabineer Regiment in Poland and took part in the actions at Byaloi (promoted to sub-lieutenant) and Gorodische (awarded a golden sword). More promotions followed: colonel on 18 April 1799, major general and chef of the Suzdal Musketeer Regiment on 8 June 1800. In 1801-1804, Likhachev served as a battalion commander in the Life Guard Semeyonovsk Regiment.
On 23 May 1804, Likhachev was appointed chef of the Tobolsk Musketeer Regiment, but he took a discharge from the army on 16 November 1804. Returning to the service, he assumed command of the militia in the Jaroslavl gubernia and served in Byelorussia (received the Order of St. Anna, 2nd class, with diamonds). In 1812, he led the Jaroslavl opolchenye and operated between Smolensk and Vilna. In 1813, he took part in the sieges of Modlin and Breslau before retiring in November 1814.
