Chapter Eleven
Roseâs hair spilled down her back as she swung her legs over the side of the bed. A chill slipped across her toes and she extended her arms into the air. Her sleep-ridden brain had half expected to see the inside of a stagecoach. Instead, the dark wood of the walls in Samâs home came into view.
She turned her head and looked towards the ceiling. Sheâd really done it. Sheâd traveled across the country and narrowly escaped Mr. Whitney. The nervousness that had been resting in her belly was quelled by the thought that sheâd really escaped just in time in for Christmas. Even if she couldnât completely warm up to Sam for one reason or another, she was already doing better than where sheâd come from. She imagined her father and brother breathing a sigh of relief in Heaven.
The floorboards creaked from the hallway and she made quick work of slipping into her dress and stepping into a fresh pair of shoes. She peered into the mirror that hung on one end of the wall, where Sam probably stood most days before he hurried off to start the dayâs work, and she pressed her palm against her hair.
She smiled at the woman in the mirror before leaving her hair as it was. The days of forcing her complicated hair into tight buns were over. She moved into the hallway, then downstairs, where the sunlight poured in through the windows.
The decades old wood floors were painted gold by the sunlight and the smell of fresh bread wafted past her nose as she stepped into the kitchen. A note sat on the counter, right in front of the bread with Samâs blunted letters printed across it. Fresh bread for you this morning. Thereâs nothing better. Enjoy and relax today while you settle in.
Warmth spread throughout her chest and she carefully sliced a piece of the bread. She sank her teeth into yeasty bread that had been seasoned with cinnamon and nutmeg. As she chewed, a flash of black flew past her window. Her eyes followed Samâs back as he bounced along on his horse.
Heâs probably been up for hours. Heâs so hard working. She couldnât imagine Mr. Whitney jumping out of bed and getting a start on the chores that waited that day. Sam seemed humble and didnât mind putting in a dayâs work. She admired that.
Rose grabbed another piece of bread and sank her teeth into it. She savored the lovely feel of freshness in her mouth as she was reminded that she hadnât had a decent meal in weeks. She scanned Samâs kitchen while she finished the rest of her breakfast. Pots and pans had been haphazardly organized, while clean, the sight of the pots and pans carelessly dangling above the counters and floors made her temples ache.
She wore a small grin as she moved forward and brushed her fingers together. The remainder of the bread crumbs fell to the floor and she bent over to sweep them up not wanting to make a mess her first day there.
