Chapter Five

“That was really wonderful!” Ivana enthused.

“I do agree with you,” Nanny replied. “Those young boys sang like angels and that’s a fact!”

They were walking back to the house from Westminster Abbey.

They had heard the choir from the Abbey and from two other Churches rehearsing for a concert.

It was the Earl who had sent them the tickets with a note saying,

“I think you will enjoy this.”

There was no signature, but Ivana knew at once that it was from him.

Ivana was thrilled at the idea of hearing the choirs of the three Churches, which were to sing at Canterbury Cathedral in a week’s time.

She had been feeling slightly apprehensive that there might be people there who would notice her.

And perhaps they would say something afterwards that would give her stepfather a clue as to where she was.

When she and Nanny entered Westminster Abbey, they found that their seats were in the far side of the Nave.

Looking round Ivana realised that the congregation consisted mostly of elderly people and she thought too that the majority of them were not the sort of people who would associate with the raffish set that entertained and amused her stepfather.

Once she felt reassured, she settled down to enjoy the singing.

It was, as Nanny had agreed, absolutely wonderful.

The young clear voices soared up to the roof and to Ivana they seemed to be part of the stained-glass windows, the flowers on the Altar and the sanctity of the Abbey itself.

The event had begun with prayers led by the Bishop of London.

Ivana prayed fervently that she would be able to help the Earl and not disappoint him.

When they came out of Westminster Abbey, it was growing dark and luckily they had only a short distance to walk back to Queen Anne Street.

Because they had not taken a key with them, Ivana raised the knocker.

The door was opened by Smith and, as they walked in, he informed her,

“Monsieur’s back, miss, and with a friend in the study.”

Ivana felt guilty, she should have been on duty and attentive. Perhaps she had missed hearing something vital that would be of great interest to the Earl.

As Smith disappeared back into the kitchen, she took off her bonnet and handed it to Nanny. She then took off the wrap that she had taken with her in case it was cold.

Nanny did not say anything.

Ivana realised, however, as she went up the stairs, that she disliked and disapproved of what she was doing.

She went into the drawing room, which was in darkness.

There was just a faint light coming from a street lamp a little farther down the road.

She tiptoed up to the mantelpiece.

Immediately she heard the voice of a man talking in the study.

It was the Marquis, who was speaking in French.

“ – by the garden door,” he was saying.

“Oui, I have found out where it is.”

She knew at once that the answer came from Pier.

Then the Marquis dropped his voice to a whisper as he said something that sounded to Ivana like,

“ – a Field Marshal.
