This method of hunting is used by some of the diurnal raptors as well, most notably the harriers. At the right time and place in Britain, you could observe Short-eared and Barn Owls and Hen Harriers all ‘working’ the same area of rough grassland. Weather conditions affect the ease and likely success of flight hunting for all of these birds, and dry weather with a bit of a breeze is ideal. The birds can then fly into the headwind and use its uplift to save a little energy. If you are watching an actively hunting owl, try to position yourself with the wind behind you, and the bird may come towards you. Very still air makes active hunting harder work, and the same is true of very windy and rainy days. When the weather is unsuitable, the owl may resort to sit-and-wait hunting from a perch instead.
