If a young Osprey is already in poor condition from its journey, moving to areas where fishing is more difficult can be fatal. It must also be wary of crocodiles, jackals and feral dogs, all of which will readily snatch an unsuspecting juvenile Osprey that is floundering in shallow water or perched on the ground. Discarded fishing nets that litter beaches along the West African coast pose a threat, too, and in some locations Ospreys are intentionally killed, with naive young Ospreys especially at risk.
