Detour past Ovid’s Fine Art of Getting a Roman Lover to His Fine Art of Getting Rid of a Roman Lover

Publius Ovidius Naso—we know him as Ovid (ca. 43 BC–AD 17)—says that he was exiled from Rome because of “a song and a mistake.”31 The song was the Ars Amatoria—literally the Art of Love, though its meaning would be more accurately conveyed by A Seduction Manual for Playboys and Playgirls. “Do what you will and make love” was Ovid’s philosophy. It did not sit well with Caesar Augustus and his imperial plan for discouraging fornication.

Ovid’s poem remains subversive. Conservatives and progressives alike still want to exile him! Is the problem, as conservatives hold, that it’s accurate about human nature and hence sexually corrupting? Or is the problem, as progressives hold, that it’s sexist about human nature and hence politically incorrect? Or maybe you’re the kind of person who’d rather have a Roman lover than be either progressive or conservative? In any case, when we look past the poem’s satire and cheekiness, here’s the gist of his advice for a man seeking a woman:
