Roll Out the Dough
“There you are!” Helen exclaimed when Sammy raced in the back door of Just Like Grandma’s. “It’s not like you to be late, and you can’t exactly tell me that you got stuck in traffic since you live upstairs.”
“I could this morning, since I was running some errands, but honestly I just lost track of time.” Sammy never should have taken the side trip to Billy’s trailer park. It took longer than she had anticipated, even though Billy wasn’t home, but it had been impossible to resist at the time. “I’m sorry.”
“That’s all right. Just do me a favor and take the orders from the tables over there in the corner before you start baking. They’ve already been waiting for a while, and two extra minutes to wait for rolls or biscuits won’t kill anybody.”
Sammy did as she was asked. Even though Helen hadn’t seemed all that bothered by her late appearance, and she had never been late for work before, she found herself moving more quickly and putting all of her effort into her job as a way of making up for it. Helen gave her a few looks throughout the day but didn’t say anything about it.
When her midafternoon break came around, Sammy quickly untied her apron and hung it on a peg by the back door. “I’m going to run an errand while I’m on break, but I’ll be right back.”
Helen put one hand on her ample hip and looked at Johnny, the cook. “You see this? She comes in here, performs better than any waitress I’ve ever hired, gets the whole town addicted to her baking, and then she suddenly starts showing up late and running away every chance she gets.”
Johnny, who never said much, simply shook his head.
“I don’t suppose this would have anything to do with Austin, would it?” Helen queried. “You know I fully support what you’re doing, but I don’t want it to affect your work.”
“I’m just going to talk to one person,” Sammy promised. “I can’t stop thinking about it, and I didn’t have any luck this morning. I won’t go over my break.”
“You sure won’t,” Helen warned, but there was a glint of humor in her dark eyes. “Go on with you, then, or else I’ll make Johnny get out on the floor and start taking orders.”
The cook had been flipping a few burgers and toasted cheese sandwiches on the grill, but he paused and to give his boss a startled look.
Helen laughed. “Don’t worry, honey. I haven’t tortured you like that yet, and I don’t plan to. But you’d better hope that Sammy pays attention to her watch today.”
With a smile, Sammy ducked out the back and walked down the alley before turning up toward Main Street. She crossed the road and walked into the front door of a building whose arched windows and intricate brickwork indicated how long it had been standing in downtown Sunny Cove. A large desk sat squarely in front of the door in the lobby, at which a young blonde woman was tapping frantically at the screen of her phone.
