This 1888 photograph taken by F. E. Chapin shows his campsite near Ypsilon Creek. The creek flows out of Ypsilon Lake and joins Roaring Fork. Chapin’s wife named Ypsilon Mountain, and another peak in the Mummy Range was later named for Chapin. One of the early explorers in the range, Chapin wrote extensively about his experiences and in 1889 published his book, Mountaineering in Colorado.

A group of campers set up their tent, table, and fireplace in 1908 at Bierstadt Lake. Several features in the park are named for noted artist Albert Bierstadt, who first came to the Estes Park area in the fall of 1876 as the guest of the Earl of Dunraven. He painted and sketched scenes of the area and helped select the site for the building of the English Hotel.
