Chapter Ten

As they walked through a small utility room and entered a dry, clean kitchen, the summer cabin was heaven come to earth. For a long moment they all just stood there, dripping water on a clean tile floor, shivering and trying to adjust to the blessed shelter from the pouring rain.

Their escape from the threatening elements had come so suddenly that Allie couldn’t gather her wits. They had broken into somebody’s house, and all the life-giving comforts that they had taken for granted were here. Obviously, the house was occupied. There were dishes drying in a rack, a book lay on the kitchen table and a couple of sweaters were tossed on a kitchen chair.

“Hello, hello,” Scott called from a kitchen doorway leading into a long living room that stretched the width of the house. No one answered. Only the clatter of rain on the roof broke the silence. They trailed into the living room. The walls were brightly painted, decorated with pictures of flowers and kittens and the floor was covered with vibrant Indian rugs. It was a beautiful summer cottage, loved by someone.

“We need to get out of these wet clothes. It’s all right, honey. We’re safe now,” she soothed to a whimpering Cathy. Then Allie shivered. “It’s cold in here.”

“If there’s butane gas in the tank, we can turn on the wall heaters.” He pointed to the gas panel in the living room. “And I’m betting there’s hot water for baths.” He smiled through raindrops dripping from his saturated hair and trailing down his cheeks.

“There’s a box of matches by the stove,” Randy offered, his quick eyes having already taken inventory of the kitchen. “I’m hungry,” he said, eyeing the cupboards as if he could scarcely wait to rummage through them.

“First we have to get out of these wet clothes,” Allie said firmly. Everything that they had on was encrusted with slimy mud.

“We ought to be able to find some warm things to put on,” Scott agreed.

“Are we going to steal their clothes?” Randy asked in surprise.

“Borrow,” Scott corrected.

Leaving a wet trail across the living room, they found the cabin had a nice-size bedroom and connecting bath. When Allie saw a baby crib in the corner of the bedroom with twin beds, her stomach took a sickening dip. “A baby!”

The missing family suddenly grabbed at her heart. Where could they be? “Do you think they got caught in the flood?”

Scott didn’t answer. He knew that any car traveling on the dirt road below the house would have been swept away in the rising torrent. There was bound to be loss of life in a flood like this one, but it wasn’t going to do anybody good now to go into that scenario. He was still reeling from their narrow escape from the camp.

Allie’s shoulders began to shake, and Scott realized that she was near a breaking point. How she had held up so gallantly this long in the cold, rain and physical exhaustion was astounding. He’d never known anyone with such dogged determination and faith.
