Vacation rental, Tossa de Mar, Spain, July 27, 2040

“You want the truth, I’ll give you the truth,” Charley said, fighting to keep his tone calm. “After dinner last night I was lonely. You weren’t here. I couldn’t sleep so I chatted with some webcam girls for a while. It was no different than if I had gone to a club and bought a girl a drink.”

“Go on.”

“That’s it,” Charley said.

“Were they pretty?”

“Sure, I guess.”

“Prettier than me?”

“Uh, not really. They were okay.”

“What were they wearing?”

“Uh, why do you care? They wore clothes...mostly.”

“Meaning what? Meaning some didn’t wear clothes?”

“Mia, where’s this going?”

“I’m curious, Charley, that’s all. Did they undress for you?”

Charley felt his face grow hot again. “Yeah, if you must know. One stripped for me.”

“What else?”

“Mia, stop with all the questions. It’s none of your business.”

“Don’t blame me for being curious about what you like. I’m getting to know you, remember? How old were the girls?”

“Geez, Mia. I don’t know. I guess about your age.”

“About my age...nobody younger, say in her early teens?”

“I don’t know the ages, Mia. Based on their appearances they looked around my age. Why does age matter to you?”

“Do you know what sex trafficking is, Charley?”

“Yeah.”

“I did a little research yesterday while deciding whether to come here or not. Sex traffickers often force underage girls to perform in webcam rooms. So, big boy, you could have been having a jolly good time with girls who’re prisoners of a gang.”

“Like I said, they looked our age, and they weren’t prisoners. They enjoyed our time together.”

“Oh, how nice. Of course, they would have thought their time with you, Mr. Wonderful, was the highlight of their day. Tell me, are you going to go back to these girls tonight?”

“No, of course not. You’re here.”

“Ah, so if I’m here you won’t look at porn, but if I’m gone you will. Is that right?”

“With you here, I won’t be lonely.”

“But I’m fully clothed? That must be really boring for you?”

“No, what’s boring is this line of questioning. As you so eloquently said earlier, we’re not in a relationship. What I do in my private time isn’t your concern.”

“All right, let’s say instead of doing porn, you’re doing hard drugs regularly—cocaine. Shouldn’t the fact that you’re involved with an addictive substance influence my decision to pursue a relationship?”

“Sure, but coke is addictive. Porn isn’t.”

“That’s not what medical science says. Porn stimulates the brain in much the same way as drugs. It is addictive. Do your own research if you don’t believe me.”

“Okay, I will.”

“But addiction isn’t the worse part of porn, big boy. It warps a man’s perspectives of women to the point where they can’t have a normal relationship—not emotionally or physically. So I ask you, why would I want to invest any time with someone who will be unable to be a normal man with me? A guy who sees all women as objects, as sex slaves?”

“I don’t see you that way, Mia. You’re a smart, talented, very attractive girl...uh, woman.
