Study Analyses

The SIV was used to code each participant as SIV+ or SIV-. The four threat control override (TCO) symptoms were assessed through self-report queries embedded in the Prison Background Information Survey (PBIS). We chose in our analyses to include TCO symptoms in our social cognitions category of risk factors as our analyses suggested that most respondents interpreted the three TCO questions as reflecting reality-based perceptions of others rather than internal stimuli associated with a psychotic illness. These social cognition variables were assessed for gender differences and for their association with the five categories of sexual behavior in prison.

The results in Table 7.10 underscore the violent perceptions that characterize the experiences of the male and female inmates in our sample. Significantly more male than female inmates reported having thoughts of harming others (i.e., SIV+). However, no gender differences emerged in terms of TCO symptoms. Overall, over one third of the male (42.4%) and female (39.9%) inmates reported at least one of the three TCO symptoms, most often the perception that others were intending harm toward the individual.

The correlations of the social cognition variables with types of sex are presented in Table 7.11 (males) and Table 7.12 (females). For both the male and female inmates, any-sex was associated with thoughts of harming others (SIV+), thoughts that others wanted to harm the individual, and endorsement of at least one TCO symptom.

Predatory sex among the male inmates was associated with thoughts of harming others (SIV+), thoughts that others wanted to harm the individual, and endorsement of at least one TCO symptom. None of these social cognition variables were associated with predatory sex among the female inmates.

Male sexual victimization was associated only with thoughts that others wanted to hurt the individual. Among the female inmates, sexual victimization was associated with both thoughts that others wanted to harm the individual and with the endorsement of at least one TCO symptom.

Bartered sex engaged in by male inmates was more likely to be associated with thoughts of harming others (SIV+), less likely to be associated with thoughts of others wanting to cause harm to the individual, and less likely to be associated with at least one TCO symptom. No social cognition variables were associated with bartered sex among the female inmates.

Male inmates engaging in consensual sex were less likely to experience thoughts of harming others (SIV+), were less likely to experience thoughts of others wanting to harm the individual, and were less likely to have endorsed any
