Dietary Intervention

A Mediterranean diet has shown benefit for RA at six months. It also has resulted in a decrease in pain and stiffness, and improvement for an index of disability, pain, medication effects, costs of care, and mortality.12 In another study, for 12 weeks versus control, the Mediterranean diet provided significant improvement in pain, swelling, function and overall health.13 An anti-inflammatory diet of foods low in arachidonic acid showed significant improvement in RA joint tenderness and stiffness compared to controls, and lower inflammation factors leukotriene b4 and thromboxane, especially when supplemented with fish oil.14

Only those patients having had no improvement in the prior two years were selected to participate in this study.
