CHAPTER ELEVEN – A DATE PREDICTED

RACHEL STOOD ON A SIDEWALK at an intersection. Groups of people walked past her, all heading in the same direction. The crowd was much thinner than that in front of the church.

How did I get here?

She was startled by a white van that quickly whipped up in front of her and stopped. She could see Rick behind the wheel grinning in anticipation at her through the open passenger window.

“Get in,” he called out.

She pulled the door open and sluggishly climbed into the passenger seat. Rick pulled away from the curb, veering around a few people that threw them dirty looks for passing too closely.

“What happened?” Rachel asked.

Rick scrunched his face and glanced in the rearview mirror at Abe, who was just as perplexed by the question.

Abe, hunched over, moved away from his monitors and other equipment and hunkered up between the two front seats.

“What do you mean what happened? You called us and said to pick you up at that intersection.”

“I did?”

“Yes!” Abe and Rick exchanged worried glances. Abe looked back at Rachel. “Are you all right?”

“Yes. I feel great in fact.” She looked almost drugged. Now they were really worried. She went on. “Didn’t you see it and hear it all?”

“No. We lost the signal when you entered the church,” Abe said disappointedly. Rick solemnly nodded confirmation. “These old buildings are so overbuilt, with unnecessarily thick walls, that it’s not unusual to not be able to get a clear signal through them.”

“You saw nothing?”

“That’s right.” He grabs her clutch and held it up. “But the trusty chip in here would’ve gotten everything. We’ll play it when we get back.”

“Good!” she said, satisfied. “What you’re going to see is amazing.”

When they reached their hotel, Rachel impatiently prodded Rick to hurry into the parking garage and take the first available spot. She wanted them to see the recorded footage as quickly as possible. They thought she was acting like a spoiled child and Abe purposely took his good ‘ole time loading his equipment from the van into a cart. Rachel felt the ride up the elevator to the floor Abe’s room was on seemed to take forever. She was antsy as she paced back and forth watching the floors pass on the digital display.

Abe and Rick thought that if she was indeed drugged when they picked her up, the effects of whatever she was dosed with had faded.

Once in Abe’s hotel room, Abe expertly attached a USB cable to the hidden port in Rachel’s purse to his editing equipment and fired up the main monitor.

The chaotic image of people’s torsos filled the screen.

“Rachel walking through the crowd,” Abe said absently.

Rick and Rachel leaned over each of Abe’s shoulders to get as close a view as possible. Their heads were like three pumpkins on a windowsill. Abe shrugged in annoyance.

“Hey, you both are crowding me.”

They both moved a little back and to the side.

The image on the monitor bobbled its way up the stone steps that led to the front of the church.
