Thunder awoke Cordelia from a sound sleep the next morning, and when she opened her eyes, she saw lightning flashing in the distance outside the open window. Memories flitted through her mind from last night’s coupling with Rowen, and she smiled until she realized the bed next to her was empty.

“Rowen?” She shot upright to see him sitting in the corner with the light of the lantern illuminating the chessboard and its pieces. He moved the copper rook and captured the silver knight.

“Damn,” he said, shaking his head, still staring at the board. She scooted to the edge of the bed, totally naked. Feeling uncomfortable in this position since he was fully clothed, she wrapped the bedcovering around her. Still, he didn’t even look in her direction.

“What are you doing?” she asked, jolting in surprise as a crash of thunder shook the ship, and it rocked back and forth like a helpless pawn in the angry sea.

“There is a rag and water in a bucket next to the bed. I’d suggest you use it if you need to, before it spills all over my floor. The weather is getting rough.”

She felt and saw the evidence of their lovemaking on her body, and smiled. Although her muscles ached, it was in a good way, from taking all of Rowen into her when she wasn’t used to a man that size. She reached over for the bucket and cleaned herself as he suggested.

“I’ll be sure to have a bath prepared for you once we reach Scotland.”

“Thank you. I’d like that.” She hurriedly dressed in his clothes again, although she noticed her gown and the gown he’d given her both dry and spread out across a trunk.

“Your gown is dry if you’d like to wear it. I had Link clean it and hang it out to dry.”

She pulled one shoe and then the other onto her feet, and walked over to him, holding onto whatever she could since it was so rocky she thought she’d fall. Making it to the chessboard, she could see it was secure with the rim of boards nailed to the table holding it in place. The pieces were sturdy, and unless the ship rocked uncontrollably in a storm, they looked like they’d stay in place.

She heard a slight squawk and looked over to a perch Rowen had set up that was sticking out of the wall. Mya was atop it, holding on with her talons.

“Rowen, if you don’t mind, I think I’d like to leave my gown as well as the one you pilfered with Magdalena. I’d also like to leave some food and coins from my dowry for her and her children and the people of the island as well.”

“Really?” This announcement caused him to look up from his game. “I thought your dowry was important to you so you could give it to the king and marry the man you want. If you give it away, you’ll lose your edge.”

After last night, she wasn’t sure why he was saying this.
