Occupational asthma

Occupational asthma is thought to be caused by the complex interactions of multiple genetic, environmental and behavioural influences, although a lot of these agents have been identified and the disease is categorised by the causative agent (Maestrelli et al. 2009). The specific workplace agents that cause allergic occupational asthma are recognised by the IgE-mediated mechanisms. These are generally high molecular weight compounds such as acid anhydrites, platinum salts, reactive dyes and sulfonechloramide. Other agents are isocyanates, persulphate salts, aldehydes and wood dust. Organic dusts (such as cotton or flax) can also cause asthma-like symptoms, though the aetiology of the disease is not yet fully understood (Dykewicz 2009, Maestrelli et al. 2009).
