Chapter Thirty-two

ach vehicle had a slightly different sound, and I was learning to differentiate between them. The little Mercedes that Eduard parked at the kerb almost purred.
âSomeoneâs keen,â Dom murmured, moving to the window. âAre you going to tell him?â
âThat someone was watching me transmit this morning? No. Iâd rather he not find out what Iâm doing.â
Not because I didnât trust him. He knew I was part of Special Operations; he just didnât know exactly what I did for them.
She drew the curtains. âI donât know if that makes me feel better or not.â
Neither did I. If he knew that I was in danger from the Resistance as well as the Boche, heâd try to get me out of Normandy, whether I agreed to leave or not.
âHe has a dog with him,â Dom said.
âKnut?â
I joined her at the window, watching the Alsatian shepherd bound down the walkway ahead of Eduard. I tried not to laugh when Dom cringed at the dogâs claws on the front door.
âWhat that door has gone through,â she said, shaking her head.
Smothering a grin, I let him in, stepping back as the dog danced around my legs, and when that wasnât sufficient, he jumped. His paws hit my shoulders; the force of his leap sent me crashing to the floor.
When Dom and Eduard reached me, I was flat on my back, with six stone of happy dog licking my face.
âHeâs missed you,â Eduard told me, fighting back a smile.
âWith that sort of reaction, youâre right,â Dom commented from a safe position around the parlour door. âItâs better that he saw you here first, rather than out in public.â
âMy thoughts exactly, Frau Severin,â Eduard said. âEnough, Knut.â
With one last lick across my face, Knut returned to Eduardâs side. My husband helped me to my feet, looking chagrined when I ruffled the fur on the dogâs head before greeting him.
Dom held out her hand in a loose fist for the dog to sniff. He obliged, tail wagging, and thrust his snout into her crotch.
âQuite enough of that,â she scolded, red-faced. âHow are you going to fit both Katrin and your dog in that little car, Colonel?â
Eduard appeared to consider that for a moment.
âI suppose Knut could stay with you, Frau Severin?â
Dom cleared her throat. âIâm sure youâll make it work.â
With her back straight, she returned to the parlour, closing the door firmly behind her.
Eduard managed to wait until we were halfway down the path to his Mercedes before commenting, âYour friend doesnât like dogs, does she?â
âShe likes them fine. Just prefers cats, I think.â
âThen it must be me.â
He allowed the ghost of a smile to emerge, and half-surprised, I asked: âYou like her, donât you?â
âShe cares for you, Angel. And she will watch your back. For that alone, I am grateful to her.â
He opened the door, allowing Knut in first. The dog posed in the passenger seat, tongue lolling in a canine smile, moving to the almost non-existent back seat only at Eduardâs command. It was the same
