Chapter Thirty-Four

Brin returned to the interview room almost an hour later. He had read the transcript of MI5’s fourteen-hour interrogation of Mosley, and the man was repeating his answers now but giving nothing new away. Impatient to get the information Guy wanted, Brin continued to goad his former boss with accusations and insults. “You haven’t changed. You still insist on blaming everyone else but yourself. It was Unity, Joyce, Ramsay, the government, the dukes … all their faults, never yours. You forget I was present at your dinner parties and privy to your private conversations with Diana. I heard what you wanted to do straight from your own mouth, and what came out of it was filth and treason.”

“And what did I want, Gregg?”

“You still want the Duke of Windsor back on the throne, the return of Lloyd George to the government, the dissolvement of all other political parties, a violent coup d’état, and total power so you can expel every Jew in Britain to some island off the coast of Africa. One of your aims involves charging someone on the outside to compile a new White List, and you will use this list to recruit people for your puppet government led by Adolf Hitler. Tell me I’m wrong.”

Mosley’s chest rose and sank as if he had just run a mile. His flushed face looked ready to burst and his eyes narrowed to the point of being almost closed. “You used entrapment to stick those charges on me. You broke the law, and anything you say should be thrown out of court. Except there will be no court case, will there? No, you don’t want the people of this country to know the truth about MI5 using my right to free speech as a weapon.”

“I never forced a single word to leave your mouth. Everything you said came from your heart, and it is because of your insatiable need to lead your insidious crusade that the Swinton Committee wants to transfer you and all the BU’s other leading fascists overseas.”

Blood drained from Mosley’s shocked face. The redness faded and his skin turned greyish white. Brin, who had never seen a scared Mosley, continued, “It’s the truth, Tom. They want you and your generals gone. They’re talking about Australia for you.”

“That’s the most outrageous thing I’ve ever heard. They can’t expel me! I’m not some immigrant. I’m a loyal subject of the crown!”

Brin laughed. “To the crown, maybe, but in your mind, which king is wearing it?”

“They can’t do this. I am not a convicted criminal.”

“Ah, but they can.”

Mosley looked horrified, which spurred Brin to ask, “Is there some plot afoot to free you from prison?”

“That’s preposterous.”

“That’s it. You’re afraid the Nazis won’t be able to name you their puppet ruler if they invade Britain and find you’re no longer in the country? The government is serious about this, Tom. The Swinton Committee has recommended that the military handle or move the four hundred top fascists who are currently being held at Ascot and York.
