2The literature typically uses the term gatekeeper to refer to individuals who have the power to decide whether to grant access to a group or organization – what are referred to as ‘qualified prospects’ below. As Randall et al. (2007: 174) observe, however, ‘In an organizational context these can include different managerial sections, secretarial staff, “shop floor” workers, and more. In other words, gatekeepers are not always the high-status members of an organization, quite the contrary.’
