Chapter Eleven
Come Wednesday night, in the most proper, respectable manner possible, Lord Montague and his sister conveyed Miss Lucy Beresford to Almackâs. His lordshipâs coach had collected her at Devere House, where he effected the introduction to his married sister, Lady Carrington. The lady shared her brotherâs dark hair and eyes, and though the resemblance between the siblings was striking, nothing about Lady Carrington was masculine. She was remarkably pretty and dressed as impeccably as her brother.
Lucy remembered reading about the ladyâs success the year she was presented. It was the year before Lucyâs own presentation, and the newspapers at the time were full of accounts of the popularity of Lord Montagueâs sister, Lady Sarah Lansbury.
In contrast to her brother, Lady Carrington was a chatterbox. She went into a long story about how she had procured their Almackâs vouchers from Lady Sefton. âOf course, I am a subscriber,â she pointed out. âIn fact, I never miss an assembly during the Season.â
Then it stood to reason, Lucy mused, Lady Carrington would be an excellent source for information about newcomers to that venerable institution on King Street. âHave you, perchance, encountered any menâor womenâwho are Almackâs novices this Season?â Lucy asked.
Lord Montagueâs flashing gaze met Lucyâs. âParticularly foreigners?â
âI have met Madame Bergier there this Season. I canât think why she hadnât been to Almackâs before. I daresay sheâs been living on Cavendish Square since we were children, Arthur. And she dresses divinely. Sheâs a widow, you know. Very charming. She fled Paris during the Terror. Her husband didnât make it, but they apparently managed to divert their fortune to England.â
It seemed odd to Lucy to hear his lordship addressed as Arthur since his closest friends called him Monty. But his sistersâ acquaintance with him obviously predated the time of his succession to the Montague title, and he would always have been Arthur to them.
Even though Lucy had never believed the assassin would be a woman, Lady Carringtonâs information all but stripped Madame Bergier from their list of possible assassins. The dead man said that the assassin has come to London. Such an assertion removed from suspicion anyone who was already a long-time resident of London. Or at least it would seem so.
His lordship finally managed to break into his sisterâs soliloquy on Madame Bergier. âHave you met any of the ladyâs countrymen? Particularly any new to London?â
âI must confess, Arthur, I pay no heed to the men. Unless theyâre on the hunt for a wife of the ton, the men tend to confine themselves to the card room, and as you know, I abhor gaming of any kind. Iâm always remarking to Carrington that he simply should not play for high stakes. Iâve seen too many noble families lose everything thatâs not entailed over the roll of dice or the turn of a card.â
Lucy cut in. âWhat about any Frenchmen who appear to be wanting to mingle in Society?â
Lady Carrington thought for a moment. âA Monsieur Allard did ask me to stand up with him.
