Chapter Twenty
Duncan opened his eyes and found himself standing in the middle of Sydney’s cottage, his arms still wrapped around her. He thought to ask her how she managed such extraordinary magic, but there was time for that later. At the moment he wanted no answers to questions; he simply wanted to love her.
“Are you sure of this?” she asked, slipping out of his arms to take a step away from him. Why she felt the need to ask him she did not know, but the need was there and she could not ignore it.
He smiled and began to undress, reaching to unwrap his plaid. It was a smile that had long haunted Sydney’s dreams. He wore the audacious grin when his intentions were for them to make love, and it never failed to excite her as it did now, though she remained a bit apprehensive.
“It has been some time...”
His actions silenced her for his plaid had dropped to the floor and his shirt was off in no time, which left him standing naked, gloriously naked. He had aged well, his muscles thick, his waist filled out some and his stomach solid. He was a mature man in mind and body and his body told her the truth of his desire.
Why then did she feel vulnerable?
He stepped toward her; she stepped back and wondered why. She had dreamed endlessly of this moment, this reuniting and the consummation of their love—so why then did she hesitate?
He reached out and brushed a stray hair from her face.”Are you sure?”
The tenderness of his touch, the concern in his voice, the way he stood without doubt and filled with such passion for her made her realize that it was her own feelings of inadequacy that caused her apprehension. Would he find her as desirable as he once did? She was no longer the young woman he once knew, but much older than he realized and while she had remained in relatively good shape, age still had a way of leaving its mark.
But then as she had often told those who sought her advice, true love sees through the eyes of love and accepts with the deepest of hearts.
She pressed her cheek to the palm of his hand. “Aye, I am sure.”
His hands slipped to her waist and began to pull her blouse from her skirt. “Then it is time to shed all that stands between us.”
He referred to more than clothes and Sydney silently agreed. At this moment in time there could be no other thought but the two of them. Nothing else mattered, only that they loved, for in their joining was their beginning.
Her blouse fell to the floor; her skirt followed and she stood naked before him with pride and an excitement that showed in her generous smile.
He scooped her up into his arms, hugged her to him and kissed her lips as he walked to the bed and lowered her down, following along with her. He stretched out beside her and with one finger began to explore her slowly, starting at her face.
