Pearl was ever the mother hen. After hearing about Addieâs cottage, she forbade her to return. Addie had been there today only long enough to straighten up before returning to the Fishersâ.
âJust let some time pass, and weâll see what happens. Otis is arranging for the window to be fixed.â
Addie sat nursing a cup of hot cocoa. âI just donât understand why someone should be so meanâso destructive. Iâve never done anything to hurt anyone, and yet they chose to hurt me.â
Pearl brought her another blanket and tucked it around Addie as she curled her legs up under her and leaned a little closer to the fire. The evening had turned out rainy and chilly, and the dampness seemed to permeate clear to the bone.
âTry not to dwell on it. There are a lot of strangers in town, and Iâm sure there are a great many evil people trying to make their own lives better while causing others to suffer. Iâm just glad you had nothing of value that they wanted to take.â
âI love that little cottage, and it makes me so sad that now that this has happened, my focus is all about someone breaking in. I donât know if I can ever see it as a happy place again.â
âIn time, itâll pass. Youâll see.â
âI hope youâre right.â
For several minutes, they sat in silence. Addie had little desire to do anything but stay exactly where she was. She knew that tomorrow sheâd be expected to offer her talks about the Yukon, but she wasnât sure she could. Having the house broken into made her feel a weariness sheâd never known before.
âIâm grateful to God for His protection of you. You could have been there when the thief came. You might have been hurt.â
âI know. I should be grateful as well, but . . .â Addie shook her head and took a long sip of the cocoa. âWhy did God allow it to happen, Pearl? All of my life someone has been telling me that putting my trust in God is the way to go. That He loves me and will take care of me. That He will keep me safe from evil. But then this happens, and I just canât help but question the matter.
âAll of those years growing upâmy father and brothersâ cruelty, living with unsavory characters, and being left to fend for myselfâhow does that show God cares? These last few years with you and Otis have been good ones, but even then, I question them. You and Otis took care of me, not God.â
âThatâs where youâre wrong, Addie. God played a major role in us having anything to do with your life.â Pearl took a seat and smiled. âWe never intended to have a young woman take our room. When we advertised, we were certain weâd find a young man and hoped he would be someone who could work for Otis and learn the photography business. But instead, we got you. In fact, we didnât have a single other person apply for the room.
