Chapter 8

The Islands’ Popularity Grows

The islands of Sanibel and Captiva really came into the limelight after World War II. Renowned violinist Albert Spaulding gave a final concert from his home on Captiva in the spring of 1950. His wife, Mary, was serving tea to their island friends. Writers like Merrill Folsom of the New York Times called the islands the “Tahitis of the Gulf.” Max Hun, in All Florida Magazine , named them the “Get Away from It All Islands.”

In 1956, Holiday Magazine wrote an article about Sanibel featuring a seashell worth $2,500. National Geographic published sixteen pages of Sanibel’s most exotic and colorful shells. Even Reader’s Digest published a condensation of Anne Lindbergh’s book Gifts from the Sea , reportedly written on Captiva.

To add to the notoriety, cartoonist J.N. “Ding” Darling, a Captiva resident, built a unique “Fish House,” which was a studio in the middle of the bay accessed by wharf and drawbridge. Wanting solitude, he just pulled up the bridge. Residents honored the privacy of these famous people, never giving them much notice.

In June 1950, the Intercounty Telephone Company connected a telephone line at Ferry Landing. Pontoon seaplanes taxied up to shore, and in 1953, Casa Ybel had its own grass airfield. The possibility was also discussed of connecting all the islands up and down the west coast.

Sanibel mosquitoes set a new world record when a lone trap collected 365,000 in one night. In 1955, the Mosquito Control District started to dig drainage ditches, working east to west.
