Chapter 5: Key points

The traditional principle for goal setting in large companies is alignment: the concept that all employees are working directly toward the same common goals. The alternative principle is obliquity: the concept that goals are often best achieved when pursued indirectly.

The oblique principle is not well understood in the business world, but many companies implicitly use it already, for example when establishing their long-term vision or when setting goals for R&D scientists. This chapter suggests that there are three different approaches to goal setting that draw to some degree on the oblique principle: (#1) pursuing an indirect goal where focusing on A leads subsequently to B; (#2) pursuing a creative goal where some of the efforts directed toward A are then amplified and targeted toward B; and (#3) pursuing a leap-of-faith goal where a higher-order vision is set with little regard for where it might subsequently lead.
