Obiticide and the Average Citizen

PROMINENT PEOPLE, be they politicians, actors, or musicians, are given the privilege (or burden) of a canned obituary treatment. But they are by no means the only people to perish by obiticide. Regular folks are murdered by the media on a regular basis. Worse, most don’t have the means to purchase a corrective ad in Variety, like Abe Vigoda. In the aftermath of the error, they also know no one will build a Web site devoted to their longevity. These are silent deaths, fixed only by a small correction and/or an apology that few people read.

On November 21, 2005, former University of Akron president Dominic Guzzetta joined the long list of people shunted into an early grave by a newspaper. The Akron Beacon Journal reported he had been “posthumously” honored at a recent fund-raiser. In its resulting apology, printed the next day, the paper reported that he had received twenty-five phone calls by noon of the day it appeared. “I guess they wanted to be among the first to extend their condolences,” Guzzetta told a Journal reporter. “I look forward to reading about my resurrection.”

Anyone who is a “former” anything is much more susceptible to obiticide. Guzzetta left his post at the university and was “posthumously” honored. The same is apparently true for judges. An October 12, 2005, correction from the Cleveland Plain Dealer read:
