While the definition of informal employment, casual employment and part-time employment varies across countries, the World Bank provides an alternative estimate of vulnerable employment combining all such employment (shown in Figure 5.2). According to the World Bank information, vulnerable employment is def ned as a percentage of unpaid family workers and own-account workers in total employment. Similar to the earlier fact, vulnerable employment in Europe and Central Asia has been roughly 15 per cent including all countries and nearly 20 per cent in developing countries only in the year 2010. It registers around 15 per cent in OECD and Europe for the same year. The share of such employment is substantially high in the rest of the world. It has been more than 30 per cent in Latin America and Caribbean countries. In the developing countries of the Middle East and North Africa, this is slightly higher and more than 35 per cent. The share of vulnerable employment in South Asia has been almost double that of these countries and accounted for more than 80 per cent in 2010. All this information justifies the existence of the informal sector and its upsurge in recent years. Therefore, the growth of this sector must have some implication for formal sector performance.
