CHAPTER TWENTY

Two days passed without Morgan saying a single word to Wesley, and she actively avoided him. He noticed, however, that she didn’t shirk her responsibilities. While he was in meetings with the king and his advisors, she would slip into his room and work on their reports. He’d come back to find them complete and laid neatly in a pile. He spent a great deal of time thinking about her words, and on the afternoon of the third day, he walked slowly into the king’s meeting room. Wesley had requested to speak with the king, Bernard, Jaspian and Altamir. Standing before them, he wiped his hands on his trousers.

“There’s something I need to tell you. I’ve been carrying this a long time, and it’s been weighing on me heavily. You all deserve to know.” Taking a shaky breath, he launched into an explanation of his previous life in Gan Gamin, his corrupt—and sometimes cruel—ways of acquiring wealth, and the reputation he had attained before leaving the coastal city. He also told them about Helen and Lilla. When he finished, all four men stared at him with unreadable expressions. He forced himself to look at them, his face full of apprehension.

Eloekim broke the silence. “Why didn’t you tell us before?”

“Forgive me, Your Majesty. I was ashamed of my previous life. I wished to build a fresh start here. When you offered me the job, I saw an opportunity to build a new reputation based on honesty and hard work. I didn’t want my past to follow me. But, as it turns out, I couldn’t leave it behind. It haunts me,” he confessed, using Morgan’s words. “And I feel my current reputation is worth nothing without you knowing the truth about my past. You have been so generous and trusting of me. I don’t want your faith in me to be misplaced.”

The king’s lip twitched. “It’s not, Wesley. I never expected you to have a spotless past. Knowing what you’ve come from helps me appreciate all the more the man Abneriel has made you into. Thank you for telling me. For telling all of us.”

Jasp and Altamir nodded, and Bernard voiced his agreement. “I know that wasn’t easy to do,” he said kindly.

Wesley merely nodded. He took a deep breath. “If you would like me to offer my resignation, I understand.”

Eloekim’s brow shot up. “What? No, Wesley! It’s not my place to judge you for your past. You’ve left it all behind. You’ve chosen a different path, by Abneriel’s mercy and grace. He has not rejected you, and neither do I.”

Wesley swallowed hard, fighting the lump choking him. “Thank you, Your Majesty.”

Eloekim stepped forward and shook Wesley’s hand, thanking him again for his honesty. Feeling lighter, Wesley left the room. Jasp and Altamir jogged to catch up.

“Why did you feel the need to tell us?” Jasp wondered.

“You’ve known me longest. I didn’t want to keep it from you,” Wesley explained. “And you’ve trusted me in the past to act with honor around your wife and sister.
