It takes nearly losing someone to recognize their true worth, I once heard. That rings true for me right now. I can still see her face when they “walked” me out of that room hours ago. Though now, it feels like a lifetime ago. For eighteen years, we’ve been part of each other’s lives. Ate together, fought together, laughed together. Today, we got torn apart. Just when I fall in love with her. I run a hand through my hair.
Ruby. How long have I thought about her, smiled when I remembered something funny she’d said in the past? Now I know I loved her from the moment I saw her. I just didn’t know it.
The sun is completely set as I look in the distance, ready to make my second trip back into the Cortexe Corp. complex.
Red. I gave her that nickname. We’d been friends for a few weeks. Somehow, it felt easier on my tongue than her real name. Everyone knows rubies are red. I feel a smile light up the corners of my mouth. At least, I’d like to think so. Though she’d asked me to call her Ruby instead yesterday, I know it was out of anger or fear of what could happen to us if things change.
Sometimes, I think I understand her more than myself. We clicked from the day a boy tried to get at her at the orphanage. Initially, I observed them from a distance. I can’t tell why I fought for her the first time. The second time was a clear choice. The light bulb at the hallway was out so neither of them saw me approach. He’d threatened her. I watched her reaction. For a six-year-old, I was stunned by her graceful and fearless stance though faced with an obvious disadvantage. She stood like she could take on the world with her little finger and not even bat an eyelid.
I was taken right away. I had to step in. I had to stand up for her. I wanted her friendship. I wanted her to be part of my life. We grew up helping each other through tough situations. Like when Ruby’s aunt—her only known relative—who visited her once every couple of months, lost her battle with cancer. We were twelve. I saw Ruby suffer when she received the news. Through the years, we were a staple in one another’s lives. Just two people who understood each other well, fiercely defended, and liked each other.
Red stood up for me whenever anyone came at me, without hesitation. I could see she cared about me. But I don’t think she ever saw us being more than friends. If she decides that’s how it’ll continue to be, could be tough but I’ll respect it.
“Okay, man, I got to go back in.” I pat Mike on the shoulder. I give him my watch. “Here. So you can keep track of time.” I need to know the time inside, but now, it means I work faster without it.
He grabs my arm as I attempt to leave.
