AND THEN

No jabirus on Jabiru Avenue not the sort of place that does what it says on the tin. No jabirus but plenty of other birds and some of them water birds and waders and everything like moorhens and godwits and lapwings and spoonbills. Like those dirty-feathered long-legged egrets. They’d scavenge in the mud and the muck and the silt down there at the bottom of the hill down where the asphalt peters out and the road swings swiftly to the left and you’re only one mistimed clutch change from ending up in the bay.

Down there where the ground is so rotten it would bog a duck.

No jabirus here but plenty of people crammed inside the rickety kitchens of the weatherboard shacks and the post-war redbrick numbers inside the timber-framed fisherman’s cottages clad in asbestos and everyone clinging to some kind of hope like they clung to the side of that hill yeah see them there just hanging on.
