Jade—
I know I told you that I couldn’t share this information, but the time has come for me to enlist your help. Even if I wanted to continue to keep this secret, it is not a luxury I can afford anymore. Things are moving, and fast.
You were always the student at Wissen Schule that reminded me the most of myself, and so I hope to rely on your confidence, as well as your help.
Because I showed an affinity for biology and coaching early on, the Ten Colony Council selected me to be a teacher, and I was taught to read at a young age. I devoured the Knowledge I received, always craving more, and through careful planning, years of scavenging for old books, and many sleepless nights, I gained much Knowledge through years of devoted study. Yes, Jade. I believe Knowledge is acquired, not inherent. But there isn’t time to explain that now.
By happenstance, I later learned that I was not alone in my hunger for Knowledge, and I soon found that a few members of the community flocked to me in order to learn what I had to teach. So, I started a secret school for Seconds (and even a few Firsts) who desired to gain Knowledge.
In this small group—which obviously includes our mutual friend, Gideon—we believe that wicked men, not the Knowledge they possessed, destroyed the world all those years ago. We believe that Knowledge, if used properly, can be wielded to make a better society—one where there is more equality, freedom, and intelligence for all mankind.
We are not the only group that believes this, nor are we the only ones who seek change.
Despite the fact that most in our society believe that the ideal is to evolve into humans who know nothing, I—we—believe that Knowledge is beautiful, useful, and even virtuous.
So I come to you, Jade, in order to seek your assistance. There are many holes in my Knowledge (since I cannot arouse suspicion in my colleagues by asking them to enlighten me), so I need your help. The wonderful people in my class need as much Knowledge as they can get (especially if they are to be accepted by the rebel Thirds), and I’ve reached the limits of my usefulness.
If you are interested in helping me teach this class, meet Gideon at the old library on Sunday during your free time. He will wait for you there and give you everything that you’ll need, including a few basic instructions from me.
I don’t need to remind you how important it is to keep this absolutely secret. Study and prepare only when you are completely alone, and talk to no one about what we are doing here.
If you do this for me, I will tell you everything—including what I know about Michael. If you do not want to help, I understand. But I trust your discretion nonetheless.
Sincerely yours,
CP
