The most common risk of gestational diabetes for babies is macrosomia or excessive fetal growth. Babies born to mothers with gestational diabetes are typically larger than those born to mothers without diabetes, usually weighing more than 8 pounds, and 13 ounces. This can lead to an increased risk of shoulder dystocia during delivery, where the baby's shoulder gets stuck in the mother's pelvis during labor. This can lead to complications such as nerve damage or a fractured clavicle.

Babies born to mothers with gestational diabetes are also at an increased risk of hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, shortly after birth. This can cause problems such as seizures, difficulty feeding, and jitteriness.
