Chapter 11
Rare Diseases and Common Diseases: Understanding their Fundamental Differences
Abstract
In Chapter 3, we listed a set of biological properties that distinguish rare diseases from common diseases. In the subsequent chapters, we introduced a number of concepts and experimental discoveries that were relevant to the rare diseases. In this chapter, we revisit the observations listed in Chapter 3, interpreting each observation based on information learned in subsequent chapters. We also introduce the concept of rare diseases hidden within common diseases, and discuss quantitative methods whereby hidden rare diseases can be uncovered.
