Chapter Four
There were in the truck again, and this time Giraffe wore clothes and shoes. Shoes were awful things—heavy and stiff and terrible. He kicked one off where Joe couldn’t see. He didn’t want to upset the big guy, but… yuck. There was snow everywhere they drove and it was pretty. Eventually, the trees gave way to a few houses and then they turned into a big parking lot with a huge building at the end of it. One story, it was wider than the circus.
“The grocery store,” Joe pronounced as they pulled up to it. “This is where we’ll buy our food.”
“The grocery store.” He’d seen commercials. Lots of things happened in those.
They parked fairly close to the big store and Joe got out, came around, and opened his door, the shoe he’d kicked off falling onto the ground.
“Oops.” Joe picked it up and put it back on his foot. “You don’t want to lose that—your foot will freeze.”
“Oh. These are… odd.” Awful. Terrible.
”They’re far too big for you. They should have a pair here that fits you. Nothing fancy, but they’ll keep your feet warm and be the right size.” Joe smiled and offered him a hand to help him down.
“Thank you.” He felt like a stranger in his own skin, but that was okay. This was an adventure, something wonderful and wild. Something new.
Joe’s hand was warm and he kept hold of it while they walked into the store. Joe grabbed a cart and wheeled it down to the aisle at the far end. “Did you want to push the cart or should I?”
Oh. Oh, I can try. Are there rules?”
“Don’t hit anyone with it or run into any of the displays.” Joe grinned. “That’s about it, really.”
“Okay!” Giraffe pushed it, testing. It rattled. Neat. He liked rattling. “What’s next?” So far, this was good.
“Now we go up and down the aisles looking at all the food and putting the stuff we want to try in the cart.” Joe led the way and he followed. “The produce aisle is first.”
The produce aisle turned out to be rows of fruit and vegetables, many of which he’d seen but never eaten and some he’d never even heard of. There was also lots of celery. Joe put one of those in the basket, then made a sweeping motion with his arm. “You can pick anything you want.”
“Anything?” Giraffe looked around, then carefully chose a lovely bunch of dark green leaves. “This, please.”
“That’s kale. Nice choice. You must want to try more than just that, though.” Joe started grabbing things, naming them, and putting them in the cart. “Cabbage, brussels sprouts, beets, beans—green beans, not the same as the ones we had out of a can last night. Broccoli and cauliflower. Tomato, carrots, mushrooms, and a couple different squashes. Oh, avocado, yes. Did I miss anything that looks interesting?”
All he could do was stare. So many amazing choices. So many colors. He touched one, then another, picked up the red tomato balls to smell.
