As soon as Michaela walked ahead of me and inside of her house, I quickly seized the moment to text Rush. She’d constantly been by my side since we left the house and texting while driving was absolutely out of the question. So, I took advantage of my first opportunity to text and it was maybe two minutes after the text went through that Rush called to let me know that he was en route.

I knew that the residence had been cleared for entry by police and it had since been cleaned, but I still felt weird about being there. I had never been in a home where someone had been murdered, and sadness engulfed me. I’d heard the details of Janae’s murder, and that wasn’t anything I’d wish on anybody—not anybody.

The place had been set up nicely. It was furnished with purple, a lot of pink, and white. It was definitely a girl’s palace. There was even a purple accent wall in the large living room. Looking straight through the open living room, the stainless steel kitchen was also immaculate. Either it was pristine before Janae’s passing or someone had come in and made it look model-ready. It was a gorgeous place and made me think of what my own bachelorette pad would have looked like if I’d ever had one. I had only ever had roommates, and the closest I’d come to living alone was when I first met Rush and lived in the guesthouse for a while.

I remained in the area nearest the front of the house, allowing Michaela to spend private time in her room, which was what she’d told me she wanted to do. However, my real reason for waiting was one much more dire—fear. Straight up, I was afraid of being there. I leaned against the wall close to the hallway and held onto my belly, coming close to tears thinking about how much pain Michaela was in right then as she took time to herself.

A few minutes into my thoughts, I heard a knock at the door and knew immediately that it was Rush.

Thank God!

I couldn’t open the door quick enough. “Hi baby,” I greeted as he swept through the door.

He bent down quickly to kiss me and then asked, “Where is she?”

“She’s in her room.” As he started in her direction, I stopped him. “Rush . . . you’re not mad at me for bringing her here, are you?”

“Nah, not at all, baby. She asked you to. I understand why you did it. I appreciate you for being there for her.” After that, he turned on his heels and rushed off to check on his daughter.

My mind was telling me to go to the car and head back to the house. But my heart was tugging at me to stay just in case I was needed. It was me that Michaela had asked to bring her, so it might be slightly upsetting for her to emerge and find that I’d left. I
